LOCAL ICONS. Greetings from Rome / Alcantara – MAXXI Project

At MAXXI, a postcard from Rome by Alcantara.
An exhibition curated by Giulio Cappellini & Domitilla Dardi.
Zooming on a scooter along the streets of the Eternal City, enjoying a typical Roman dish in a Trastevere restaurant, journeying through ancient history, admiring the wonders of St Peter’s, wondering at the locals’ gesticulations… what more is there to an experience of Rome? Seven leading names in design were invited to apply their creativity in responding to this provocation.
From 26 March 2015, Gentucca Bini, Lanzavecchia + Wai, Marta Laudani and Marco Romanelli, Paola Navone, Patricia Urquiola, Stefano Giovannoni, Zanellato/Bortolotto are the protagonists of LOCAL ICONS. Greetings from Rome, a new project in the ongoing partnership between MAXXI, the National Museum of XXI Century Arts, and Alcantara.
With “LOCAL ICONS. Greetings from Rome”, MAXXI and Alcantara start off on a journey of exploration of the images that define places rooted in a culture’s collective memory, while taking a fresh look at them through new thinking articulated via design.
We appropriated the most famous cupolas of Rome; San Pietro and the Pantheon as well as the marble textures of the Eternal City and translated them into two projects: “Cupolone” and “Marmi DIY”

“Fifty Years Of Singapore Design”

The permanent exhibition “Fifty Years of Singapore Design”, documents and celebrates Singapore’s design landscape from 1965 – 2015. It will chronicle the iconic, pivotal and popular designs in Singapore as well as the visionary works by trailblazers/pioneers of early Singaporean design in the past five decades.

We are honoured to contribute from our “No Country for Old Men” collection – “Assunta” chair and “MonoLight” to this first permanent collection of Singaporean design. Both pieces, having travelled to major design showcases around the world, we’re proud to finally have them on long-term display at the National Design Center on homeground.

“People in The Process” Talk

A journey from then till now to what’s next.
Hunn, together with together with Nathan Yong of Nathan Yong Design, will share the markers of their design journey and how it has impacted them as designers today. A conversation between these two designers of very diverse backgrounds and approaches gives an insight into the lifelong learning journey of a designer.
They will also discuss things like their motivations and inspirations that drive their respective studios, to a rather comprehensive look into the oft-unseen stages and processes of the design work invested into projects.
Hunn is looking forward to see you there in the audience!
“PRESENZE. Biografie inedite di cento oggetti

The objects loved by people are presences with a soul. Life drives us to surround ourselves with objects that we pick out, even though it seems they are the ones that choose us.
These objects are engaged with our life, like presences that unconsciously build our history. It’s about new or old things with an aura of mystery, things that become important to us and to the space in which we live: they inhabit it, they organize it and sometimes they beyond their function and pass through our lives.
They seem to be complex identities that enrich the real or conceptual relationship of use in our life. Hundred presences (Presenze) coming from our real or imaginary history, are collected in “Spazio Ex-Verniciature” of Allestimenti Portanuova, as fragments of an original and everyday dimension.
They are intimate and indipendent presences that talk to us through their unique and unrepeatable history. The objects are selected because of their peculiar story or just because we met them. Different and occasional presences of our daily life, these things are able to generate new habitats, they are like witnesses following our destiny, in other words, ourselves.Came to see our Circus Cloches collection we designed for Edizioni Secondome.
